Virginia Tech student charged in beating

A weekend fight at the VA Tech Sig EP house. One person in the hospital in serious condition. A brother incarcerated.
Justin Patrick Lonsdale, a 19-year-old student at St. Mary's College of Maryland, was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital early Saturday and was then transferred to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery for severe head trauma Saturday, Blacksburg police said.

Police arrested 19-year-old Virginia Tech student Justin Michael Love on Saturday afternoon and charged him with one count of malicious wounding.

The fight began outside the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house, in the 400 block of East Clay Street, when an argument erupted over Lonsdale's name not being on the guest list, police said.

While it appeared the disagreement had been settled, police said, Lonsdale was then attacked in the driveway of the fraternity house. Police said the attack was unprovoked.

Love, who is originally from Fredericksburg, Va., has been suspended from the fraternity pending the results of the police investigation, Beideman said.

(Chapter President Ron)Beideman called the fight an "individual isolated incident" and said it was out of character for a fraternity member. "We are well-rounded men who don't believe in fighting," he said.
