As there is still the problem of high water at times near the stream, Weitzel said with the help of Mid-Penn Engineering of Lewisburg and members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Bucknell, the lower and prone to flooding area of St. Mary Street Park will be turned into a wetlands garden later this spring. Therefore, the park’s tendency to flood will be used as an attraction.
Sigma Phi Epsilon, interested in doing local community service, will solicit local nurseries for the materials and arrange and plant them according to plans now being developed by Mid-Penn.
“Within two months, work will begin in that area to transform a park that floods into a wetlands garden,” said Weitzel. He added the plantings, rocks and ground cover will all be of the sort found in natural wetlands.
Wetlands. Not exactly wet t-shirts but all for a good cause.
