The recent loss of University and national recognition for Sigma Phi Epsilon has brought to attention what recognition means and what fraternities can do to gain it back. The currently unrecognized fraternities Phi Kappa Sigma and Sigma Alpha Epsilon are both planning to start fresh on campus.
"Recognition matters because without it the organization lacks respect, validity and worthiness," said Stephen Pappajohn, Coordinator of Greek Affairs. "In addition, without recognition, no organization can use the UNH name or logo, participate in group activities, use University space for events and meetings or use the University web to link to.

"We are willing to re-colonize a chapter if when they were closed, they were closed on good terms with the University," Pappajohn said. "This was the case with Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Both closings were initiated by national offices and advisors, and were not centered around conduct issues, but rather operations and finance."
According to Pappajohn, Sigma Alpha Epsilon plans to begin re-colonizing with new members during the 2006-07 school year. He says that the University is very supportive of this effort, and will also be supportive of any effort made by Sigma Phi Epsilon to re-colonize in the near future.
Please tell me they won't let the SAEs back before us.
