CLA - Day 2 - Breakfast for the Hearing Impaired

Robert Earle Keen and Bob Seger at 8:00 o'clock in the morning is odd enough. But when the volume is turned up to eleven it will curdle the cream in your coffee. I don't really object to the selections, but I was not able to talk to my tablemates for the sheer noise factor. Greg finally turned down the music so we could get on with awards - the morning ones were for manpower and recruitment. Did I mention that recruitment is being beaten to death this weekend? They then showed a video about... the Executive Recruitment Retreat, which looked suspiciously like one of those "You can be a Millionaire" infomercials you see on late night TV. Finally they handed out the "Excelcior" awards for improvement. No surprises - the awards were mostly for, ahem, manpower and recruitment.

After breakfast we went to respective sessions. Because the session I was facilitating dealt with Standards and Ritual I can't really go into detail (as in, I could tell you, but...). I will say that we were supposed to work "recruitment" into all presentations - quite a challenge for the Ritual discussions!

Lunch was rubber chicken on top of rubber ziti with plastic mousse pudding for desert. There was, thankfully, no 'mood music'. There was, however a rather lame video about academics touting our amazing stats of an above 3.0 average for the entire fraternity. The academic awards wer delayed for just a minute whie the assembled chapters were chided from the podium for having no "Phi Beta Kappa Wheelhouse" recipients - that is a chapter average of 3.15. Heck, if it was easy anyone could do it.

Post lunch was more secret stuff that is not for blogging. Acutally it is really mundane but just not public. I can report that I had to tell one of the undergrads that if he wants to add the "interesting and meaningful addition" they do at his chapter to the Ritual, he should submit it as a change proposal at the next Conclave. If the Conclave accepts it then so be it. If not, they have to quit. He got quiet and just said, "never mind" as he walked away. (Besides, not every chapter can find sheep on short notice.)
