Subject: RE: Research Request
Dear Mr. M:The library researched the Masonic record of William Hugh Carter and it is complex in that he was a member of many Lodges, etc. From the cards on file is found the following information:
Raised in Chase City Lodge No. 119 in 1904; withdrew in 1911; affiliated with Love Lodge No. 311 in 1913, however the Lodge surrenders it Charter in 1914 and he affiliated with Winchester Hiram Lodge No. 21, his name appears on the roster in 1915; withdrew from #21 on 6-9-1925; affiliated with Crewe Lodge No. 123 in 1925; withdrew from Crewe Lodge on 12-31-1929; affiliated with Marion Lodge No. 31 on 1-20-1930 and served as Worshipful Master in 1935; affiliated with Taylor Lodge No. 23 on 1-5-1950 while remaining a member of Marion Lodge No. 31, holding dual membership. Received 60 year Veteran's Emblem in 1964.In the Commandery he was created in 1925 in Olivet Commandery No. 18 in Crewe, Virginia. He withdrew in 1929 and affiliated with Lynn Commandery No. 9 in Roanoke, Virginia. He served as Commander in 1936 in Lynn Commandery.Due to some of the Royal Arch Grand Chapter Proceedings lacking Chapter rosters in the library collection, research lacked the sources to trace his membership. Here are some of the pieces found:
In Tyrean Chapter No. 8 in 1926 in Crewe, Virginia, served as High Priest in 1928 and Chaplain of Southwestern Royal Arch School of Instruction 1930; also Chaplain of Host in Chapter No. 8 in 1926; affiliated with D.C. Shanks R.A. Chapter No. 31 in 1947 in Roanoke and with Marion R.A. Chapter No. 54 in Marion, Virginia (could not find year) serving as Chaplain in 1938. He held dual membership in both Chapters and is listed under deceased in 1972 in each.Library recommends contacting the Grand Commandery and the Grand Chapter to find out more about these memberships.Should you have further inquiries, the library is happy to assist.Sincerely,Marie BarnettLibrarian
