Sig Eps remember brother at vigil - WKU

Tragic accident takes a new member.

Sig Eps remember brother at vigil - College Heights Herald: News:

On Saturday night, members of Sigma Phi Epsilon gathered in the Valley to mourn the passing of one of their pledge brothers.
Demetrius Freeman/HERALDFordsville freshman and Sig Ep pledge Cory Beavin died Friday night, Sept. 27 in a car accident in his hometown.

Fraternity members and other friends of Beavin assembled at an intersection of sidewalks in front of McCormack, many of them holding lit candlesticks.
Ashland freshman Caitlin Brown, one of Beavin’s friends, spoke to the crowd, inviting members of Sig Ep to speak about Beavin and share their favorite memories of him they had.
Brown said little is known yet about the circumstances of Beavin’s death.
“We don’t know many details,” Brown said. “We don’t know if he was with friends or if he was the one driving. We don’t know if he was under the influence of any sort.”
During the vigil, a radio placed on a bench played music from the 2012 movie adaptation of Les Miserables.
Brown said the use of the movie’s soundtrack had two meanings.
“He loved that movie and he loved France,” she said. “He was obsessed with it.”
She said the soundtrack was also played because of a particular memory it brings to her mind.
“One of the last memories that me and three other friends of his had together is, we were in his car blasting music from Les Mis and one of our friends hated it and we were all just singing to him,” she said. “It was just one of the last memories we had together.”
During the vigil, the mourners walked around McCormack and after they returned to the area in front of the building, Andrew Cusick, a 2011 WKU graduate and former Sig Ep member, led the fraternity members in singing Alabama’s ‘Dixieland Delight’, which he said is their fraternal song.
When the singing was over, the mourners were invited to write messages on a posterboard that will be displayed at the funeral or on notecards that were then affixed to a small crucifix.
Brown said information about the funeral will be made available as soon as possible.
Louisville freshman and one of Beavin’s pledge brothers, Nick Vaetens, said he got to know Cory during their time in Sig Ep.
He said he thinks Beavin’s death has brought the fraternity closer together.
“We’re showing respect and love to a brother,” he said. “Not everybody in the house, not all the alumni knew him but we all come together. We take care of our own.”
Brown said Beavin’s death has been difficult for her and for Sig Ep. “We’re taking this very hard right now,” Brown said. “We’re all very solemn and very depressed but we’ve all stayed together today to just be there for each other.”
She said it was difficult to lose Beavin because “his life just began, his adult life in college. He didn’t even get to live not even a year of it.”
“We were all going to go out when he got back and, you know, be together and now we’re just here for each other instead of with him,” she said.

This young man was only in the TN Alpha chapter for a short time, but he was still a brother. When he passed away recently the current chapter members honored him with a notice on "The Rock" - an impromptu billboard used for years by students with something to say.

Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity
Brothers and Friends,
The Fraternity wants to do all it can to reduce administrative burdens and direct chapters to high quality, cost-effective service providers. That way, you and other chapter leaders can focus more energy on making the SigEp experience the best on your campus.
During the past few months, SigEp Headquarters staff and its Technology Task Force have researched technology solutions for chapters and AVCs struggling to consistently manage billing, finances and annual IRS tax filings. After reviewing the market options, the staff and task force chose Legacy Financial(LegFi) as the best fit for our Fraternity.
LegFi is building a financial management solution specifically designed for SigEp chapters and AVCs, including many free, easy-to-use tools and resources. Visit our Legacy Financial page for more information on the tools and services available to you and your officers.

Discuss SigEp IL Epsilon (NIU) Board of Mentors

If you are interested there is an invitation at the bottom of this post. You will need a Google+ account to sign up, but if you have a Gmail address or any other accounts managed by Google your account is set up already.
Post from Michael Ellis:
Hey SigEps on G+ !   I'm hoping you can help.

Here's the thing:
_1)  Many of you do NOT live near a SigEp chapter._
_2)  Many of you would LIKE to volunteer but find the time commitment prohibitive._
_3)  Many of you could contribute greatly to the lives of our undergraduate brothers, if you just could find a way to solve 1 & 2._

So here's what I need.   I'm looking for 7 volunteers to fill positions on our new Board of Mentors for the newly formed colony (re-forming the chapter) at Northern Illinois University, IL Epsilon.   Your commitment is ONE HOUR PER WEEK to serve as a Mentor for an Exec board member of that chapter.   You'll engage with your Mentee remotely over Google Hangout.   Once a month, you'll join a Google Hangout with your fellow mentors to discuss progress, obstacles and challenges, and provide each other with encouragement.    I need volunteers for these Mentoring roles:  President, VP Programming, VP Recruitment, VP Finance, Chaplain, VP Communications, VP Member Development.  Volunteers will be hand-selected based on personal, professional, SigEp experiences and personality matches to current Undergraduates.

I hope some of you will consider joining in this pioneering new Volunteering role.   Join us - it's only ONE HOUR A WEEK - and you will be in on the ground floor of building a TOP chapter.   Great kids, just needing the guidance of some committed older brothers.   The technology helps make the commitment manageable.   Will you sign up today?

Steven Bugarin, the philanthropy chair of Sigma Phi Epsilon, awards Dimitri Whitman a medal for competing in the the second annual Chris Lee 5K Run for Hope, on Saturday, Nov. 17.
The second annual Chris Lee 5K Run for Hope was held by the UC Riverside chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon on Saturday, Nov. 17.

The event benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation and was named in honor of Chris Lee, a Sigma Phi Epsilon brother and former president who was seriously injured in a car accident earlier this year.

More than 100 runners participated at the event, which began at 8 a.m. at UCR’s bell tower. The race and the following fundraiser aimed to raise $5,000 to grant the wish of a child with a life-threatening medical condition in the Orange County and Inland Empire area.

Lee and the other car accident victim, Regan Moore, have faced serious medical battles following the crash. Lee was initially in a coma but has since made significant improvement at a rehabilitation center in Alabama. Moore also is in rehabilitation for a traumatic brain injury.

UCR’s Sigma Phi Epsilon President Matthew Womack said Lee’s dedication to the foundation makes the event’s naming in his honor all the more valuable.
