Fraternity Fate

Florida Alpha scrambles...

Members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity actually requested Thursday night's informal hearing with a board of University of Florida student leaders.

Last year, the fraternity was found in violation of the student code of conduct for having an unregistered pre-party and providing alcohol to minors. The fraternity tried to smooth things over with the self imposed sanctions of fewer parties and more community service.

The he board decided that wasn't good enough and reccommended them to be placed on conduct probation and to hold an alcohol education seminar.

The Sigma Phi Epsilon President Chris Bucciarelli refused to go into specifics about the sexual battery charges filed against a fraternity brother who was indefinitely suspended from the house after the annual party event, but did say, "It is not a reflection of our house.

It was an isolated incident that happened to be in an area where a lot of our brothers were and that's all there is to it." Thursday's hearing was separate from the criminal investigation involving filed sexual battery charges.

That case has been turned over to the state attorney's office.
