Smith kicks the soccer ball to one of his teammates during a Tuesday night intramural soccer game in the Center of Human Performance. As a Sigma Phi Epsilon member, or the Sig Eps as they are more commonly known, Smith said people often wrongly stereotype him and his fraternity brothers. He explained that 'frat boys,' as they are incorrectly labeled, are considered a negative connotation in their circle.
"It's disrespectful," he said. "We're stereotyped with that 'Animal House' image. People assume that is what it's like to be in a fraternity. The reality is not even close."
"We're just normal guys; normal college guys who like to do normal college-guy stuff," he said.
Smith joined the Sig Eps in the fall of 2000 after transferring to ASU from the University of North Texas. His reason for joining the Sig Eps was simple:
"To have fun," he said.
But Smith said fun for him doesn't mean going out and getting 'hammered' every night. He said it means hanging out with a group of friends he can rely on.
"When I came to ASU, I didn't want to be that average college student, going to work and going to school all the time," Smith said. "I wanted to be part of something bigger. I wanted to be a Sig Ep."
