Emerson College fraternity members raise money for one brother’s gender reassignment surgery

Regardless of your opinion about the subject of this news item, I think we can agree that this is very much NOT the action of a "frat boy" stereotyped fraternity chapter.

Emerson College fraternity members raise money for one brother’s gender reassignment surgery

Members of an Emerson College fraternity are raising money so one of the fraternity brothers who is transitioning to become a man can get gender reassignment surgery, a college official said.

Donnie Collins, class of 2015, was denied insurance coverage this month to remove breast tissue and restructure his chest, said Jason Meier, director of student activities at Emerson.

Collins is now being helped out by fellow members of Phi Alpha Tau, “guys in the fraternity who care deeply about one of their brothers,” Meier said.

As of this evening, they had raised $11,455, Meier said. That was above the brothers’ goal of $8,100.

“They’re doing whatever they can do to help him out,” Meier said. “One of the things we are always talking about at Emerson is being a caring and just community. And the brothers of Phi Alpha Tau recognized this and, in turn, cared about him and accepted him as who he is.”

Collins was born female, but has presented himself as a male since he began attending Emerson, Meier said. He has been undergoing hormone treatments for 14 months. When he joined the fraternity, the brothers knew he was transgender, Meier said.

SigEp Improv, That Shit Cre - YouTube

SigEp Improv, That Shit Cre - YouTube:
"This is a bit NSFW (language). In fact I am not certain how appropriate is is in any context. But I am sharing it because some effort and thought went into the video. I'd appreciate someone letting me know if this is mainstream (and I am closing in on "full-geezer" status) or if others are somewhat taken aback, as I was, by the way this scenario plays out.

Now "Get Outta my yard" and go watch it."

Tri Delta Leads Sorority World With Body Image Publication

Tri Delta Announces Partnership with Oxford University Press to Print Manuals for Reflections: Sorority Body Image Program

Delta Delta Delta, a leader among social Greek organizations, is proud to announce its partnership with Oxford University Press to print 20,000 participant manuals for Reflections: Sorority Body Image Program. Tri Delta co-developed Reflections with Carolyn Becker, Ph.D., FAED, of Trinity University, and the local sororities on that campus. Reflections not only reduces eating disorder risk factors and increases body image perceptions among participants, it also enables facilitators to gain valuable academic and leadership experience and promotes a more cohesive community of women on campus.

“We are delighted to partner with a sorority like Tri Delta, a first for us here at Oxford University Press,” said Joan Bossert, VP and Publisher of the Brain & Behavioral Sciences Division, Oxford University Press. “Our mission is to disseminate the best in research to the widest possible audience, and this project allows us to join forces with Tri Delta in equipping young women on campuses across the country with the tools they need to prevent eating disorders and foster a positive body image.”

Reflections represents the first peer-led eating disorder prevention program to effectively challenge the thin ideal among college women. Thanks to Tri Delta’s underwriting of the manual, Reflections is now officially available to Greek organizations and universities nationwide. To date, national sororities Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Gamma and Pi Beta Phi have approved this program and manuals for implementation at one or more campuses, and several other sororities and universities have expressed interest in the program.

With the printing of the Reflections manual, 20,000 women will participate in this program during the next five years. Reflections will be available to organizations and universities nationwide in August.
