Tulane University - Can you keep up with Schiffman?

While some people’s motto is “don’t sweat the small stuff,” Jeff Schiffman’s motto is simply “ SWEAT!”

As the senior associate director of admission at Tulane University, his schedule takes him all over the world recruiting students. While life on the road can make it difficult to maintain any schedule, Schiffman is dedicated to staying healthy and having fun. 

After he took a spinning class in Los Angeles a few years ago, he was immediately hooked. This led Schiffman to start teaching his own class, a high-energy, full-body workout called RIDE, at Romney Pilates Center in New Orleans. The maxim of his class might be “think with your whole body” but with his musically themed sessions, ranging from ’80s to Beyoncé to Glee, his patrons often forget to think and just have fun. 

“You’ll leave my class covered in sweat,” Schiffman promises, “but it’s my hope with an incredibly positive feeling. RIDE isn’t just about your body; it’s about your brain and your heart.”

In fact, most of Schiffman’s activities in New Orleans center around body, brain and heart, and getting others into the same. Aside from doing triathlons all over the Gulf South, he participates in a boot camp in Audubon Park with Office of Admission staff. 

Through Outreach Tulane, Schiffman started his involvement with Youth Run NOLA, an organization that works to empower underserved students in the New Orleans area by training them to run races like the Crescent City Classic and Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. 

Schiffman still runs with the same group of students he started with four years ago. And last month he helped Romney Pilates organize a Pride Ride for members of the LGBT community, which had a great turnout from Tulane students and staff.  

In everything he does, Schiffman puts his mind, heart and sweat all in to help others get the most out of theirs.

Remembering a SigEp giant, Brother Mack Rankin

It has been a month since many of us gathered for the 2013 Conclave, yet the names of our members who had their last “roll call” during the Necrology are still with us in memory. Since then we have added to their numbers, with the latest SigEp, Brother B.M. “Mack” Rankin Jr., Texas-Austin ’50, passing into perpetuity.

A lifelong Texan, Mack grew up in Gladwater and attended the University of Texas at Austin where he joined our Texas Alpha Chapter in 1947.

After graduating, he served for four years in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant and was stationed in Germany during the implementation of the Marshall Plan. When Mack returned home, he began a highly successful career in the oil and precious metal industry.

Mack was a passionate advocate and activist. Indeed, it was his passion for life and cut-to-the-chase attitude that led to his many accomplishments. He wanted to get things done – and done in the right way. Mack invested substantial time in training the next generation of oil industry professionals and gave generously to the institutions he believed in. Among other projects, he sponsored endowments at the University of Texas for the head football coach and a professorship in the business school. He also partly funded the Longhorn Dining Hall, which bears his name, and led a successful fundraising campaign for the expansion of the Darrel K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium.

Mack also gave generously to SigEp, serving on the National Board of Directors and as a Life Trustee of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation. In 1981, we honored Mack with the Sigma Phi Epsilon Citation.
Mack was someone who inspired others by his character and his service. Below are some of the words from the friends and brothers who knew him best.

Those of us who had the privilege of working with him on local chapter issues, National Board issues and SigEp Foundation issues always knew where he stood and, most importantly, why. We turned to Mack for solid business advice that was so important to SigEp being a successful not-for-profit organization."

He was a straight-talking, no-nonsense businessman who, under a seemingly gruff demeanor, clearly had a love for not only Texas Alpha, but for SigEp. This is not true for every college though. The men of Sig Ep at Virginia Tech now how to be classy, and there are benefits that come with it.

Virginia Tech's Greek Village - called Oak Lane - is going under a huge expansion project, building new fraternity and sorority houses. The first house that allowed people to move in though, was the Sigma Phi Epsilon house.

Distance Mentoring at IL Epsilon SEC

The SigEp Technology Task Force has been developing the concept of bringing mentors to chapters even if they are far from the chapter or member they work with. 

In this example Mike Ellis is using a Google+ Hangout to meet with 4 others who are interested in helping an SEC achieve chartered status. You will notice two significant points that primarily support Mentoring and the learning and review that can result.

Chuck Eberly, former EIU faculty, receives honor

On a warm spring afternoon, Chuck Eberly is barefoot and relaxing in the living room of his Charleston home.

At least it looks like he is relaxing.
 
The former College of Student Affairs professor retired two years ago this May, but this is the first week he has not helped former Eastern master’s students complete their dissertations. So, he has spent the spare time uploading his research and articles onto Booth Library’s repository, The Keep.

“I haven’t really noticed what I hear people call retirement. All I can say up to this point is I no longer teach classes,” Eberly said.

Though he no longer teaches, and has since handed over his adviser duties of Eastern’s chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon last November, at the age of 71, Eberly is still being recognized for his service to Greek life.

Eberly received the Alumni Award of Distinction for the North-American Interfraternity Conference Sunday in St. Louis. Founded in 1909, the North-American Interfraternity Conference is an association representing 75 fraternities from both the United States and abroad.

Eberly was in the Sig Ep pledge class of 1960 at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and was an adviser at Eastern for 20 years.

Bob Kerr, Greek life coordinator at Oregon State University, nominated Eberly for the award because he advocates for fraternity students and works with them on the front line. His first memory of Eberly was a fraternity conclave in Dallas.

“He was working with a new computer software that would help students,” Kerr said. “He was tireless in gaining support for the work and helping students.”

In a press release for the award, colleagues of Eberly also recognized him for his work with hazing prevention. He formed a coalition with colleagues after a conference in Hollywood to prevent hazing.

In fact, a hazing incident at Eastern played a part in how Sig Ep established a chapter at the university.

In 1990, the Sigma Tau Gamma chapter was removed from Eastern after a fraternity member was found unresponsive in front of a science building because of alcohol use at a hazing related incident, Eberly said.

“That was the last straw with that group. A lot of the fellows that were going to become Sigma Tau Gamma were some of the men that started Sigma Phi Epsilon,” Eberly said.

Sig Ep was officially founded in the living room of Eberly’s Charleston home more than 23 years ago.

Kerr said it is Eberly’s hands-on work with students that sets him apart from other candidates for the Alumni Award of Distinction.

“All too often, the scholars and people in the front lines go without the recognition they so richly deserve,” Kerr said.

And even as Eberly sat in his upstairs home office where he uploads his past research, he got a phone call from a former Eastern master’s student who told him he had received a job at a university in Colorado.

For Eberly, it is important that he stays connected to his former students and helps them receive their doctorate degrees — even forming a Facebook group to stay in touch with students he had 20 years ago.

“That’s something which I believe in deeply,” Eberly said.

CLA from a Volunteer's Point of View

The weekend of February 1-3 I was on the CLA faculty for the Dallas (really Grapevine) TX CLA at the Gaylord Texan, site of the SigEp Conclave this summer (July 31 - Aug 4). The weekend was a grand success and was capped off by a surprise that caught me completely off guard.

On arriving Friday after noon we went through the usual routine of check-in, find the room, then head out to see who else has shown up. As a volunteer who has been to a number of CLAs, Conclaves, etc., connecting with others whom I only see at these events is always a treat. Some of my most cherished friendships have grown from these periodic gatherings. Many of the usual faces were in residence along with a few new ones and some disappointments who did not show up this year.

The venue was spectacular and should make for a very successful Conclave later this year. Over the course of the weekend we got a chance to get a dry run of the facilities, staff responsiveness, and of course, the food. All were first rate, though I personally think the Saturday dinner choice could have been better (tough flank steak rolled in underdone bacon is my best guess). Lets hope the menu improves by August. There were plenty of configurable meeting rooms, and even when I threw a curve by showing up with a projector for my session the hotel staff didn't break a sweat and got it set up right away.

Friday night I was tasked with facilitating a reading of the proposed "Brother Mentor" Ritual that is expected to be voted on at Conclave. As this is a public post I will simply say it is obvious the Ritual Task Force has put a lot of thought into making it meaningful.

Facilitating the VP Communications session took the bulk of Saturday. This was my first time as an all day session presenter, but the able and experienced Kay Robinson from OK Alpha (OSU) helped me out - or maybe I helped her - as we shared the duty. For those who would like to see what the VP Comm session entails, here is a set of presentation slides I made from the facilitator's guide.

NUTS! McAuliffe Conclave Registration Scholarship Available

I have been a volunteer for SigEp since I graduated college in 2000.  I immediately was "pulled" onto my chapter's AVC by my mentors.  I had great volunteers as an undergraduate.  They had all been volunteers for around ten years, and had taken me under their wing early on as an undergraduate.

At my first Conclave in 1997, I became truly hooked on SigEp.  My chapter had won a Buchanan Cup.  It was the third in a row for us, but the first time that I had contributed to their success.  I was excited to be a part of that legacy.  There was about ten undergraduates and alumni there from my chapter to celebrate that experience.

What’s in a NUT?
Those alumni in attendance were the long time volunteers I had mentioned above.  My chapter isn't unique.  It's the volunteers like many of you reading this that bring consistency to our chapters and help them grow.  At that 1997 Conclave those volunteers met with other long time SigEp volunteers and came together to form a Society that would celebrate our dedication as volunteers to SigEp and share the fun and fellowship that they had together at Conclave.  Loosely, this was the foundation of the Anthony "NUTS!" McAuliffe Society.

These volunteers felt so strongly about the Conclave experience that they began to raise money and sponsor Conclave registrations for deserving undergraduates.  At my first Conclave as an alumnus in 2001, I joined this group.  In 2011, I was elected as the "Brigadier General", leading this group over the two years between Conclaves.

This happens to be a Conclave year, and I'm happy to announce that we are offering our scholarship once again.  We have guaranteed that 4 undergraduates will get registration scholarships, but we may be able to offer more as our group grows leading up to Conclave.  The application is linked below.

Also if you're a dedicated volunteer interested in finding out more or even joining the NUTS! Society, please ask.  There will be NUTS! at all the Carlson Leadership Academies and they will make themselves known at the alumni receptions.

Former McDonald's Corp., CEO Fred L. Turner, who had been named honorary chairman of the board, died late Monday from complications from pneumonia, the company said. He was 80.

A native of Des Moines, Iowa, he was one of founder Ray Kroc's first employees in 1956, and then partnered with Kroc in building the McDonald's system. His grandfatherly persona and popularity among company employees made Turner something of a company mascot in his retirement.

"Fred was a true pioneer and shaped the quick service restaurant industry. We will remember his leadership, passion and dedication to McDonald's, our customers and our people," said Andy McKenna, McDonald's chairman.

Turner became president and chief administrative officer in 1968 and was named McDonald's president and CEO in 1974. He was elected chairman and CEO in 1977 and served in that capacity until 1987.

He remained chairman until 1990, when he was named senior chairman. He continued in that role until 2004 when he retired and became honorary chairman.

Turner is credited with significantly building the Oak Brook-based burger giant’s restaurant base. The chain more that tripled its number of locations and expanded into new international markets during his tenure as CEO.

He also is considered the architect of the "quality, service, and cleanliness" (QSC) restaurant operations model that launched McDonald's global growth.

Salvatore “Sam” Moschelli has won the inaugural Lawrence Technological University Greek Alumni Award for his ongoing support of a Greek organization on campus.

Moschelli joined Sigma Phi Epsilon in 1995 and served as president in 1998. He earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 2000 and a master’s degree in architecture in 2006.

Since 2010 he has been director of design and sustainability of Shelter2Home LLC based in Winchester, VA. In 2001 he became vice president of operations for Shelter2Home-Haiti S.A.

Moschelli has remained very active in the SigEps following his undergraduate days. He has served as governor of District 14 since 2004 and has been involved in many fraternity events and programs.

From 2005 to 2010 he was a co-lead in both Michigan and Ohio of EDGE, a SigEp 101 experience for new members of the fraternity that focuses on early development of leadership styles and personal development in college.

In 2010 he hosted a series of volunteer training sessions at LTU to help alumni of all Greek organizations on campus advise their undergraduate chapters more effectively. He also developed the Greek Village/Leadership series of six to eight training sessions on best practices for alumni board members of Greek organizations.

He has been very active in the Lawrence Tech Alumni Association and was a member of the Architecture Alumni Cabinet from 2009-12.

LinkedIn SigEp Group Achieves 15,000 members

The LinkedIn group "Sigma Phi Epsilon (Official)" has reached the 15 thousand member mark. Started in 2007 by alumni volunteers Eric Chan and Bryce Giesler, the group has provided a networking and discussion opportunity for SigEps and friends of SigEp who use LinkedIn for professional interaction. In addition to member discussions the group also receives articles and posts from Headquarters and the S&P blog.

The group has grown steadily since its inception and is currently the second largest social fraternity/sorority oriented LinkedIn group. Earlier this year SigEp Headquarters agreed to partner with the independently started group and added the "Official" label to the title.

The University of Toledo - Sig Ep Alumni Remember UT and a Home Away from Home

For some people, the word “fraternity” conjures up images of John Belushi wreaking havoc in “Animal House.” But for former members of the Ohio Iota Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at The University of Toledo, “fraternity” invokes the very real memories of campus and chapter activities, of brotherhood, and—for many—the memory of two Old Orchard parents who provided a home away from home.

From the mid-seventies to mid-eighties, John and Margaret Mandula’s four sons each attended and graduated from UT: Mark (Bus ’79, MBA ’80); Jack (Eng ’81, MBA ’87); Thomas (Bus ’83, MBA ’84), and David (Bus ’86). All four brothers were also Sig Eps.

Living just blocks from campus, the Mandulas opened their home for a decade to Sig Ep young men.

“My mom, who worked at UT for ten years, essentially adopted a lot of guys when we were in school,” said Mark Mandula. “Many ate, slept, and hung out at our house. As a result, she was awarded the honor of being a Golden Heart (little sister).” When she died in November 2011, Mark inherited her pledge paddle, signed by many of the young men.

Mark said he and his brothers felt a huge debt to his parents, and also to UT and Sigma Phi Epsilon. “When my dad passed away in 2003, we decided to create the Sigma Phi Epsilon Margaret R. and John Mandula, Jr., Challenge Fund,” said Mark. “My mom and dad believed in the power of education, and we felt the best way to honor them would be through a scholarship.”

The scholarship’s goal is to reward those Sig Eps who epitomize a “Balanced Man.” Criteria include grades, chapter and campus involvement, and an essay describing a challenging event in the member’s life and how he overcame it.

Building a Goal for Fall Recruitment

Michael Ellis is a former student NBD member and a world traveling businessman who still manages to stay active on the AVC of chapters as far apart as Berkeley and Purdue. How? He uses the heck out of Google+ and it's hangout (multi-video chat) feature. Click on his name and add him to your G+ SigEp circle.

How to Fund a Golf Tournament

Many chapters hold golf tournaments or similar events to bring alumni together and incidentally make a few bucks for the chapter, a Balanced Man Scholarship, I recently got this request in my email, even though I have no affiliation with the chapter or the location. I don't even play golf, for goodness sake. Fair enough. Being a blogger means I get stuff like this. 

What I do like is the way it is put together. Clear. Up front with the request. A good call to action. The particulars are shown in the PDF file - the money goes to BMS scholarships, There is a 501(c)3 tax arrangement with the university and the tax number is included. All the bases are covered. 

If your chapter wants to put on a similar event you could use this letter as a model and probably do well.
