Student predicts end of fraternities within two years

Controversy erupted over the weekend when a statistics student published his prediction that all Washington University fraternities would be suspended by May 2015.
Freshman Malik Peters, who is taking Elementary Probability and Statistics, analyzed the spacing between the recent suspensions of the university’s Sigma Alpha Mu, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapters.
“I was just doing a basic linear extrapolation, and with the rate fraternities have been getting suspended, the last fraternity is going to be gone by May 2015,” said Peters.
Peters published his results, including a graph showing the predicted decline in fraternity numbers, on Facebook Friday night, captioning the post “Say goodbye to Upper Row haha.” Within five hours, there were forty comments on the post. Several responses were positive, but most either disputed the results or attacked Peters for his conclusions.
“Yes! The Greek system is corrupt and needs to be brought down,” commented junior Aleera Anghelescu.
“dumass[sic] GDI [god damn independent, denoting a person unaffiliated with Greek Life]. were [sic] not going anywhere,” posted sophomore Alex Heineken, who is a member of Sigma Nu.
“I just think it’s ridiculous. This isn’t a scientifically rigorous study at all, but everyone seems to think…it means the end of Greek Life,” said freshman and Theta Xi pledge Gordon Himermann, who commented “One semester of statistics and suddenly you know everything? SMH,” on Peters’ post.

Barbara Bush to Marry Sig Ep?

(Note: This article came from Gawker.com - not the most accurate source for news but a great place for snark)

Barbara Bush Faces Namesake's Fate: Marrying a Heinous Yale Frat Boy
By Owen Thomas

George W. Bush's daughter Barbara is following in her grandmother's footsteps. The other Bush twin is said to be marrying on-again, off-again beau Jay Blount, a 2005 Yale graduate and fraternity member, this summer.

Blount is an associate at Casey Quirk, an investment management consultancy, which pays even junior staffers six-figure salaries. (The firm tells its clients how to tell their clients how to manage their money, or something like that.) His Sig Ep brothers are no doubt breathlessly excited about the news — though their description of Blount as a "hottie" leaves their judgment in question.

Update: Apparently Blount was hot in college, according to the Yale Rumpus! Also, he seemed to have horticultural leanings, nudge nudge, wink wink. We think that's how frat boys make marijuana jokes, at any rate.

There's more! The April 2005 issue of Rumpus reported that Blount got rejected from Yale's business school until Barbara's dad wrote him a letter of recommendation — after which he got accepted with one year of free tuition. Also, he belonged to the Yale Potato Sack Relay Team secret society.

UPDATE! -- Maybe not... says "People" mag.

Fraternity Launches "Condiments for the Homeless" Drive

Looks like the gentlemen at Ohio State have come up with a unique way to help the homeless and clean up at the same time.
(Columbus, OH) Members of the OSU chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon have started a "unique humanitarian effort" designed to aid area homeless shelters.

Entitled "Condiments for the Homeless," the volunteer campaign seeks to match those in need with those who have plenty, said fraternity president Allen Jacobs.

"Pretty basically, we saw that our main refrigerator was 'busting at the seams,' shall we say, with leftover ketchup, soy sauce, and Taco Bell sauce packets," he said, filling a grocery bag with the condiments. "We got to thinking that there were probably many frats and sororities with the same problem, and a lot of homeless people who have no relish packs for whatever food those people get fed."

Jacobs said that the SigEps took the idea to the Greek Council, and the rest "was like history."

"Our Greek brothers and sisters have really stepped up and answered the call," he said. "We have almost a trunk full of these valuable food accoutrements to take to the homeless shelter downtown, and you have to know there's a lot of good nutrition in this stuff. Plus, we only take packets that have been refrigerated, not like left in the glove box or anything."

Jacobs said that the brothers of SigEp "pride themselves" on eliminating the “Animal House” reputation that is often associated with fraternities.

"Sigma Phi Epsilon is designed to promote leaders as well as gentlemen," he proudly added. "We feel that we have, in some small way, helped bring a little light into the lives of the less fortunate, as well as making progress on cleaning out our skanky fridge."
Way to go, Guys. Nice to know the guy munching on the burger he dug out of the dumpster behind Mickey D's will have some ketchup and mayo to wash it down.
