Dear Brothers and Friends, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Brother Ehren Stanhope, Tulane ’05, as district governor of District 3 for Columbia, NYU, Quinnipiac, Rutgers, Stevens Tech RLC and Yale. I am equally pleased to announce the appointment of Brother Paul Litcher, Indiana Tech ’88, as District 3’s lieutenant district governor. Brother Stanhope resides in Stamford, Conn. where he is a product specialist at O’Shaughnessy Asset Management (OSAM). He has spent many years involved with SigEp at various levels, including serving as a regional director in the southwest from 2005-2007 and as an Alumni and Volunteer Corporation president at Columbia. In addition to facilitating multiple Carlson Leadership Academies, he was a Tragos Quest to Greece mentor in 2013. He is a former member of the Service Learning Task Force, a current member of SigEp’s Board of Governors and is actively involved in the 1901 Club of New York. In 2013, he was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award. Brother Litcher is an IT manager and contracts compliance officer with Varsity Plumbing and Heating, Inc. Currently living in Elmont, N.Y., he has a long history of diligently serving SigEp. Brother Litcher has served three chapters as chapter counselor and has volunteered for six different AVCs, including Columbia, Indiana Tech, NYU, St. John’s, Hofstra and Stevens Tech RLC. Last year he played a leading role in the NUTS! McAuliffe Society, helping raise nearly $20,000 to send undergraduate brothers to Conclave. He plays an active role in the NYC Metro Group as founder and sponsor of the city’s annual Founders’ Day Celebration. Brother Litcher is also a member of SigEp’s Board of Governors. In 1997, he received a Distinguished Alumnus Award for his service. In their new positions, Brothers Stanhope and Litcher will lead volunteer recruitment, support and training efforts for our AVCs in District 3. It’s a pleasure to have both these brothers serving in this capacity.The district governor and lieutenant district governor are excellent resources for our alumni and volunteers. Salvatore “Sam” Moschelli has won the inaugural Lawrence Technological University Greek Alumni Award for his ongoing support of a Greek organization on campus.

Moschelli joined Sigma Phi Epsilon in 1995 and served as president in 1998. He earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 2000 and a master’s degree in architecture in 2006.

Since 2010 he has been director of design and sustainability of Shelter2Home LLC based in Winchester, VA. In 2001 he became vice president of operations for Shelter2Home-Haiti S.A.

Moschelli has remained very active in the SigEps following his undergraduate days. He has served as governor of District 14 since 2004 and has been involved in many fraternity events and programs.

From 2005 to 2010 he was a co-lead in both Michigan and Ohio of EDGE, a SigEp 101 experience for new members of the fraternity that focuses on early development of leadership styles and personal development in college.

In 2010 he hosted a series of volunteer training sessions at LTU to help alumni of all Greek organizations on campus advise their undergraduate chapters more effectively. He also developed the Greek Village/Leadership series of six to eight training sessions on best practices for alumni board members of Greek organizations.

He has been very active in the Lawrence Tech Alumni Association and was a member of the Architecture Alumni Cabinet from 2009-12.

The District Governor is a SigEp alumnus who serves Alumni and Volunteer Corporations assisting with volunteer recruitment, training, and strategic planning. Brad is a litigator for Williams Montgomery & John in downtown Chicago. He is a Monmouth College alumnus and sits on the Monmouth College Board of Trustees.

Appointment of Gary Huff as Director of Volunteers

Dear Volunteer:

One of the five tenets of the Fraternity’s strategic plan is to build and strengthen the role of volunteers at the chapter level—equipping our volunteers with the skills, tools and abilities to manage the day-to-day affairs of their chapters and mentor their undergraduate leaders and officers. Grand President Archie Yeatts formed a special committee to formulate plans and recommendations for volunteer programming.

A central component of the committee’s recommendations includes a professional staff position dedicated to recruiting, training and retaining volunteer chapter leaders. After an exhaustive nationwide search, I am pleased to introduce Brother Gary L. Huff as our Director of Volunteers. Gary is a former District Governor for Arkansas and Louisiana, 1991 alumnus of the University of Central Arkansas and 2004 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Over the holidays, Gary relocated from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Richmond, Virginia, and has been hard at work designing and planning the volunteer training programs and modules recommended by the committee. As a former District Governor, Gary brings the unique perspective—District Governors are our primary network for recruiting, organizing and maintaining the Alumni and Volunteer Corporation boards at the chapter level.

Gary has taken the committee’s recommendations, working with Director of Operations Chris Minnis and volunteers, to outline 11 training modules on topics ranging from chapter recruitment, to property management, to legal issues and risk management. With training modules in hand this spring, he will begin training trainers to deliver the programs in the field.

Gary comes to us from Philander Smith College in Little Rock where he served as Controller. He has also worked in marketing and accounting for a wireless telecommunications company, operations and accounting for a startup software development company, and led the financial operations of a privately held company as it went through a series of acquisitions. Gary is a self-described “problem solver.”

As part of his transition, he has put together a grueling travel schedule to meet and begin work with volunteers at eight of the nine Carlson Leadership Academies next month (Karen Katz, a member of the Volunteers Advisory Committee, will be covering for Gary at the CLA in Burlington, Massachusetts).

You should expect to be hearing from Gary in the coming weeks to get your perspectives on building and equipping our volunteer leadership corps.

Richmond, Virginia…Sigma Phi Epsilon’s National Board of Directors has appointed Timothy R. Swift, Babson College, ’96, as District Governor for New York City and Connecticut. The District Governor is a SigEp alumnus who serves Alumni and Volunteer Corporations assisting with volunteer recruitment, training, and strategic planning.

Brother Swift is a founding member of the Massachusetts Theta Chapter and has served as President of the Massachusetts Theta Alumni and Volunteer Corporation and as Chapter Counselor.

Tim is currently an Energy Research Analyst with CRT Capital Group, L.L.C., of Stamford, Connecticut.

The District Governor is a SigEp alumnus who serves Alumni and Volunteer Corporations assisting with volunteer recruitment, training, and strategic planning.

Brother Middlemiss currently serves as Treasurer of the New York Alpha Alumni and Volunteer Corporation and previously served as Secretary.

He is currently an Associate Partner in Carta Group, associated with Sagemark Financial Consultants. David is married and the father of an eight-month old daughter, Katherine.

Ohio District Governor Named

Richmond, Virginia…Marcus P. Robinson, Dayton ’99, is Sigma Phi Epsilon’s new District Governor for Ohio. A District Governor is a SigEp alumnus who assists local Alumni and Volunteer Corporations in volunteer recruitment, training, and strategic planning. Brother Robinson previously served as Chapter Counselor for the Ohio Rho Chapter at the University of Dayton, as well as Lieutenant District Governor for Ohio. He has been a fixture at leadership events in the Ohio area, such as EDGE and the Carlson Leadership Academy. Today, he is Director of Internet Development for the University of Dayton, working to coordinate the University’s web strategy to recruit undergraduates and maintain a connection to alumni.

Brother Hofmann and Brother Skordeles - Thank You

Like many of you, I often get wrapped up in the selfish experiences that define the small world that I live in. Juggling business and family life often make it easy to forget about or marginalize the fraternity. However, two recent experiences have reminded me about the power of the Sig Ep experience and the effect that it has had (and continues to have) on many lives, including mine.

Some of you might have read about the recent passing of brother John Hofmann (OGH). Brother Hofmann’s Sig Ep experience should be textbook reading for every volunteer. Brother Hofmann’s life was a rich tapestry that combined a law practice in two states (California and Ohio) with an active family life, numerous hobbies, and many civic endeavors. Among them was his commitment to the California Gamma Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at UC Santa Barbara. For over a time frame spanning some 40 years, Brother Hofmann went from being a chapter leader as an undergrad to the heart and soul of the organization as its’ most passionate and committed (and often only) volunteer. He led the Cal Gamma chapter from the brink of extinction (on multiple occasions) into one of the most financially successful chapters on the West Coast. Cal Gamma even bought the San Antonio Conclave banner. And he did all of this, for the most part, under the radar. Never “proud or boastful”, never seeking a spotlight, Brother Hofmann’s passion and dedication touched hundreds (if not thousands) of Sig Ep lives. And he did all this while leading an extremely busy and complex life. A model servant leader in my book. I am sure there are many more stories like John’s out there. Maybe Sig Ep should compile a book of these stories and distribute them to their volunteers. Makes much more sense than another “program” or “initiative” (just my opinion). And it would probably touch many more people – and recognize a few in the process.

You also may have seen that Brother Mike Skordeles is stepping down as the District Governor (DG) in Ohio. I have had the honor of working alongside Brother Skordeles as a volunteer, and I only wish that the Southern California district worked like Mike’s machine. Sig Ep is a powerhouse in large part because of Mike’s passion, commitment, common sense wisdom, and sense of humor (a trait often lacking in many of us Sig Ep junkies – myself included). I hope we do not lose Mike to the “small world” and that we find creative ways to keep him involved. One of the fraternity’s biggest problems is our inability to maintain our volunteer base. Flares shoot up in the sky and often fade away without notice. This is not only a shame, but it forces us to waste precious time and resources trying to replace that hard earned experience and institutional memory. Instead of spending money trying to restore the fraternal hard drive; we can use these resources to enrich the lives of our undergraduates. Which is the way it should be.

Well, enough of my ramblings for today. I hope a few of you chime in comments about some dedicated volunteers in your corner of the Sig Ep world. If not, I hope you take something with you from these two awesome Sig Eps.

Another Great DG Steps Down!

He sent the following message to the troops!

I have decided to step down as DG, which I have discussed wth Chris Minnis. My decision is based on increasing time constraints (2 little ones, MBAclasses, etc) and responsibilities (more travel forwork, etc.), each of which need to be done with my full attention.

As far as timing, I feel it is wise to make a changeover the summer to give my successor an opportunity to begin getting up to speed prior to the start ofclasses. I will be discussing a transition plan with Minnis when he gets back into Richmond.

Ultimately, I believe Marcus Robinson, lt. district governor, can more than adequately step up to the challenge of continuing the success in Ohio. He has repeatedly performed well, excelling in such roles as directing OH/MI EDGEs and facilitating at CLAs, among others.

In closing, I am thankful for the opportunity to serve Ohio and the Fraternity.

           Richmond, Virginia…Sigma Phi Epsilon is pleased to announce the National Board of Directors has appointed J. Russell Stephens, Georgia, '00, as District Governor for Alabama and Georgia. 

 

           Brother Stephens will be working with chapters at the University of Alabama, Auburn University, Samford University, Auburn University-Montgomery, Jacksonville State University, Huntingdon College, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Georgia.

Huff, Central Arkansas ’91, as District Governor for the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Brother Huff has served as Treasurer of the Arkansas Zeta Alumni & Volunteer Corporation and Chapter Counselor for the Arkansas Zeta Chapter at the University of Central Arkansas. In addition, he has served as a faculty member at several Carlson Leadership Academies and the EDGE program.

Brother Huff intends to work with alumni and volunteer corporations on long-range chapter planning and assisting volunteers throughout the district. Alumni and volunteers of the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi can contact Gary at gleehuff@msn.com.

Brother Huff succeeds past District Governor J. Phillip McKnight, Arkansas ’81, recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Sigma Phi Epsilon is grateful for his service, and looks forward to Brother McKnight returning to volunteer with the Arkansas Alpha Chapter at the University of Arkansas, focusing on the long-term housing needs of the chapter.

In addition, District Governor Daniel W. McVeigh, Texas Wesleyan ’90, will lead alumni and volunteer efforts for the state of Oklahoma in addition to his work with volunteers in North Texas.

Finally, SigEp announces Districts 23, Montana, and 26, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, will be joined effective April 15, 2005. Steven R. Ruttner, Washington ’79, will continue to serve as District Governor.
