Three Charged After Drugs Found At ECU Fraternity House

 Updated: Chapter, members suspended

The Daily Reflector - Fraternity disciplines house

An ECU fraternity busted by Greenville police on Wednesday has been told to cease all activities by its national headquarters, Sigma Phi Epsilon's executive director said.

The national fraternity also has suspended several members arrested and charged by police, the organization said in a statement issued Friday by Brian Warren.

Three members were arrested on drug charges after an officer spotted stolen street signs hanging on the walls at the local house at 505 E. Fifth St., the police department reported Friday. A subsequent search located marijuana and Aderall inside the residence.

"Sigma Phi Epsilon has a zero-tolerance policy for drug-use by members and in any chapter house," Warren said in his statement. "Chapters and their members are expected to act in accordance with SigEp's values and policies. The fraternity holds member accountable for behavior that is not consistent with the fraternity's mission and values."

Three Charged After Drugs Found At ECU Fraternity House

There are more problems for an ECU fraternity that saw its charter revoked two years ago.

Greenville police arrested three people at the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house Wednesday night after an officer spotted several street signs hanging on the walls inside. After getting a search warrant, police found drugs in the house.

Officers found 49 grams of marijuana packaged for resale, a digital scale, 3 adderall pills, and $80 cash, along with 12 stolen street signs.

They charged Levi Coleman with possession with intent to sell & deliver marijuana, maintain a dwelling for the purpose of selling controlled substances, & possession of drug paraphernalia; James Mead was charged with possession of schedule II controlled substances (adderall), maintain a dwelling for purpose of selling controlled substances, & possession of drug paraphernalia; and Collin King was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintain a dwelling for the purpose of selling controlled substances, & possession of drug paraphernalia.

All three were jailed under $25,000 secured bonds.

ECU says Sigma Phi Epsilon is currently under investigation due to what they said was a recent incident that happened at the chapter house.

In December 2010, Sig Ep had its charter revoked by the national organization. But in April 2011 the national chapter reinstated the charter after hearing a student appeal.

Sigma Phi Epsilon under investigation - Ball State University

Sigma Phi Epsilon under investigation - The Ball State Daily News - Ball State University:

A Ball State fraternity has pulled out of on-campus Homecoming events while the school looks into unspecified rules violations.

Sigma Phi Epsilon is being investigated by the Office of Student Life and the fraternity’s national headquarters in Virginia, said Brandon Cutler, assistant director of Student Life.

Cutler said the case involves “alleged risk management violations.”

“Risk management” in the greek system refers to the practice of self-policing by fraternities and sororities to make sure their members avoid rules violations and stay out of trouble.

“The headquarters from Sigma Phi Epsilon has instructed that the undergraduate chapter cease operations while the investigation is ongoing,” Cutler said.

Cutler said the Office of Student Life will not release any information about the alleged violations because the probe is continuing.

Interfraternity Council president Zach Hartley said the fraternity’s decision to suspend most of its Homecoming activities was made by the local and national leaders.

Sigma Phi Epsilon president Nate Hunt said the fraternity is cooperating in the investigation and felt it necessary to cancel most of its events to “figure things out.”

The organization will not host any Homecoming events on campus, but will sponsor alumni events off campus.

“It is not a criminal investigation,” Hunt said. “Just some issues with a few members, and those are going to be dealt with by us and the university.”

A check of University Police Department records showed no runs to the fraternity’s house in the past two weekends.

Hunt said since the investigation is ongoing, he cannot comment on what triggered it.
“We’re trying to keep it contained,” he said.
