A former Clemson University employee is accused of stealing thousands in university money meant for students, and using it for himself.  29 year old Eli Ker, of Easley, was arrested and charged with breach of trust, following an investigation by SLED and University Police.  Ker was the associate director of fraternity and sorority life, according to the University.
A release issued by the University says the investigation began last month after a university employee noticed irregularities in a bank statements and contacted the school's police department.  Police say Ker took $33,820 from a Panhellenic bank account between August 2011 and August 2012, for his own personal use.
According to a SLED warrant, Ker created fake bank account statements to cover up the crime.
Ker appeared before a University municipal court Friday, and was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

U of Mn SigEp Shot 6 Times while Chasing Burglar

U of M Student Shot 6 Times while Chasing Burglar:

'via Blog this'

MINNEAPOLIS - Imagine waking up to a burglar rummaging through your things. That's what happened to a marathon-running University of Minnesota sophomore who leapt out a window, chased after the thief and got shot six times with a pellet gun.

Jonathan Rodengen is an experienced runner, and said he didn't think there was any way the thief could outrun him -- but he says he probably won't ever try to chase down a crook again.

"Immediately, I had to go after this guy," he said.

Rodengen was sleeping at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house when he woke up to find a thief in his room. When the burglar decided to bail, Rodengen dove out the 6-foot high window and followed him.

"Head first onto the pavement, chased him around the whole building, jumping both fences before I caught him," Rodengen recalled.
The thief was still wearing the backpack -- which contained beer, Mountain Dew, a laptop, wallet and keys -- that he took from Rodengen's room, and the student was able to grab it and yank him down. That's when things got ugly.

The first shot hit Rodengen in the head.

"My initial thought was, 'Wow, I'm dead right now,'" he said.
Next, Rodengen was shot four times in the arms and once in the back. All the while, he was thinking about his family and the potential funeral they would have to plan.

"My mom's going to think I'm an idiot for doing this," he said. "What the hell was I thinking? Anything can be replaced."

What's in a Nickname?

I think we need to have a "Truth Squad" to explain the difference between "ΣΦΕ" and "ΣΑΕ" to the media and to let them know that "SigEp" is NOT a common nickname for SAE.
Dec 04, 2007 (The Dominion Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ZZINE | charts | news | PowerRating -- A WVU fraternity will perform 500 community service hours for BOPARC for its involvement with the theft of a tree from White Park last week.

Brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, 660 N. High St., said they are sorry for what happened.

The fraternity will spend the rest of the year on probation for it.

Two students, one a Sig Ep brother, one not, cut down the blue spruce last week from White Park and decorated it as a Christmas tree in the fraternity house, Morgantown Police said.

Nathan Sisler, 20, of Star City, and Nicholas Casey, 18, of Morgantown, were charged with injuring or destroying a tree Friday. Sisler is a brother of Sig Ep. They also face a WVU judicial hearing in January.

Mayor Ron Justice, WVU assistant dean of Student Affairs, said the fraternity's probation means no Sig Ep brother may organize or participate in any Greek social activities. They must also pay $1,100 restitution to WVU for the replacement of the blue spruce. The university already purchased a new tree for the park.
...and it continues like that throughout the article. After the first reference gives the full name all the subsequent references are to "SigEp." Not that our guys would never do something so boneheaded as steal a tree, but they should not be blamed via an uninformed reporter for something they did not do.

Delta Chi's Get Valuable Statue Back

OSU Delta Chi Reunited with Statue

B.I.G. said it back in 1997: Mo money Mo problems. It seems that a $5,000 reward for information relating to a stolen OSU Delta Chi Statue was too good to pass up.

Less than 24 hours after the reward was offered, police got a tip and found the stolen statue in the basement of Marcus Annis’ house.

Despite having a cool name, Annis now faces burglary and aggravated theft charges. It will be interesting to see if this turns out to be a fraternity prank or something more sinister. Does anybody know if Annis is a member of a house at OSU?

Either way you slice it, this is a happy ending for the men of Delta Chi at OSU. The Corvallis Gazette Times has more:

Stolen fraternity statue recovered Delta Chi’s bronze Vulcun found after reward offer
By Gwyneth GibbyGazette-Times reporter

Corvallis police recovered a statue stolen in June from Delta Chi fraternity at Oregon State University and arrested a suspect in the theft on Tuesay.

The 3-foot-tall bronze statue of the Roman god Vulcan was stolen from Delta Chi the night of June 10, and has been estimated to be worth as much as $100,000.

Corvallis police received a phone call Tuesday, after a newspaper article announced the fraternity’s insurance company was offering a $5,000 reward for the statue’s safe return, or for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of the thief.

According to police, the person who called was someone who had knowledge of who had taken the statue and where it was being kept. Acting on information from the phone tip, detectives went to a private residence in the 400 block of Northwest 10th Street, and recovered the statue, which was hidden in the basement.

Police arrested Marcus Annis, 20, who lived in the house, and charged him with first-degree burglary, a Class A felony, and aggravated theft in the first degree, a Class B felony. The theft charge was aggravated because the value of the statue is estimated to be more than $10,000.

Police have not released the name of the person who called with the tip. They continue to investigate and there may be more arrests in the future.

According to a police report, the statue was stolen sometime around 2:30 a.m. June 10. A fraternity member woke to the sound of someone opening the door to the sleeping porch and calling out “Hey guys!” When he went to check who it was, he found no one. But the statue was gone and a ground-floor window was standing open.

Detectives confirmed the statue was heavy, weighing between 60 and 80 pounds. But it was not so heavy that one person would have required help to commit the theft.
