Sporting shotguns and breaking clays with VCU's SigEp | Survival
This brotherhood experience may not be for everyone but these guys from VA Commonwealth University - SEC had a fun and instructive outing. And they are much better prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse.Sporting shotguns and breaking clays with VCU's SigEp | Survival
It appears that our summer intern just can’t let go.
After bringing his brothers (from the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity) up from Virginia Commonwealth University for an afternoon of shotgun lessons, our Mister James Poole filed this report with NRAblog.
Centreville, Virginia – As the fog cleared that morning, blazers and bowties were turned in for shooting vests and 12 gauge shells. The students of Virginia Commonwealth University were on “Fall Break” and the fraternity brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) took the opportunity to participate in a private Trap Shooting Clinic hosted by NRA Education and Training.
The SigEp brothers started the day with a safety briefing on shotguns and proper Trap Shooting etiquette. The brothers then took positions on the shooting line where they were given 1-on-1 coaching from NRA staff. When everyone was ready, the clays started flying. Cheers roared out as they began breaking target after target, it was obvious they were fast learners.
After two rounds the novice shooters had become pros (even if only in their own minds). Comparing scores and bragging about shots they crushed; you would never believe some of them had never handled a shotgun before.

Doing shots at a party - the hard way..
Greetings from sunny and HOT Fresno, CA!
A fraternity at Fresno State (California State University, Fresno) has received some negative publicity regarding an incident that was completely out of their control. If you could, please post the story on the blog as a cautionary tale to other readers that this could happen to their Chapter and that a University will overlook factors beyond an organization's control (e.g. People "crashing" a party) simply because you are a Greek letter organization. Here is the link to the article:On the lighter side of things, the CA Phi Chapter at Fresno State achieved a 3.07 GPA as a house in Spring 2011, putting them at #1 on campus between Interfraternity Council organizations and Panhellenic Association organizations.
I currently serve as the AVC VP of Relations to the CA Phi Chapter. I have also CC'd our AVC President, Mike Rizzotti on this email. In Phi,--

Except from the article:
Fresno State suspended the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity on Monday after three people were shot and wounded at a fraternity party over the weekend.
...
Two men and one woman were shot at a Pi Kappa Alpha party about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The victims were in their late teens or early 20s, said Lt. Mark Salazar with the Fresno Police Department violent crimes unit.
At least two of the victims are Fresno State students and are enrolled for the fall semester.
...
The shooting occurred after two men "tried to crash the party," Salazar said. Fraternity members refused to allow them in and the two men returned to their car, Salazar said. When the car sped away, the suspects fired four to six shots into the crowd. About 150 people were at the party.

[...]
Police identified the dead man as 25-year-old Jamail Johnson of nearby Girard, Ohio. Johnson was shot once in the back of the head and several times in the lower body, Dr. Joseph Ohr, a forensic pathologist at the Mahoning County Coroner's Office, told CNN.
[...]
The shooting happened at an off-campus house where members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity were holding a party, Hughes said.
Police, called at 3:39 a.m., said shots were fired "indiscriminately" from outside the house. Authorities found multiple shell casings from two semiautomatic handguns, one a .40-caliber and the other a .45-caliber, Hughes said.

Shooting at Ark. university kills 2, wounds 1
A shooting at the University of Central Arkansas late Sunday night left two people dead and one injured.
The head of the University of Central Arkansas said Monday that campus was safe after a shooting left two students dead and a third person wounded. To the best of our knowledge, no one from the UCA SigEp Chapter was involved.
Police said the killings did not appear to be acts of random violence and that there was no remaining threat on the 12,500-student campus.
Police said they were questioning two people and seeking two others. All four are male and from the central Arkansas area. Police said they were not students.
Police had no motive yet for the shooting.
"It does not seem at this time that it was a random act," said campus police Lt. Preston Grumbles.
Interim president Tom Courtway, who canceled classes Monday, said, "Our campus is safe."

Mayor shot in Missouri is a SigEp
Five people died in the shootings on Thursday night.Mayor Mike Swoboda, 69, was injured and was in critical condition at a hospital. He is serving his second and final term as mayor because of term limits. Previously he served four terms on the City Council.
Two city officials spoke of his deep commitment to the community.
One called the mayor "Mr. Ubiquitous" because he rarely went to an event where he didn't spot the mayor. When first elected mayor in 2000, Swoboda pledged to work to keep the city's traditional flavor.

Oregon State AGR Uses Homeless Man for Target Practice
By Gwyneth Gibby
Gazette-Times reporter
A homeless Corvallis man who was shot by an Oregon State University student filed a civil suit Tuesday against the shooter and his fraternity.
Dennis Sanderson was hit in the leg with a bullet from a .22-caliber rifle on Oct. 14, 2006, while in the alley behind the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity house, 331 N.W. 26th St. After an investigation, police arrested AGR member Joshua Grimes, 20, of Glide, and charged him with the shooting.
Grimes initially denied involvement, but eventually pleaded guilty to two felonies: unlawful use of a weapon against another and third-degree assault. He was sentenced to 150 days in jail, which he completed in August. He also must complete 400 hours of community service at a homeless shelter, three years of supervised probation and pay $3,000 in fines.
The lawsuit names as defendants Grimes, the national AGR fraternity, the AGR foundation and the OSU chapter of the fraternity.
Sanderson is suing the four parties for negligence and battery. The suit claims medical expenses of $5,500 and seeks punitive damages that will be specified later but will be at least $50,000.
“This lawsuit is intended not only to compensate Mr. Sanderson for his injuries,” the suit reads, “but to hold a fraternal organization accountable for promoting a culture of violence, irresponsibility with guns and animosity toward the homeless.”
Grimes and the other defendants were not available for comment after the suit was filed late Tuesday afternoon. Once they have been served with the lawsuit, the defendants have 30 days to respond to the court.
When police searched the fraternity house following the shooting, they found more than two dozen weapons including multiple .22-caliber rifles, assault rifles, semi-automatic rifles, and 12- and 20-gauge shotguns.
Although the fraternity had a gun safe, many of the guns were not stored in it, according to a police report. Guns and ammunition were found in closets, bedrooms and cars.
After the shooting, all of the fraternities and sororities at OSU banned weapons, except AGR, according to Robert Kerr, OSU’s coordinator of Greek life.
The lawsuit claims that the fraternity should have taken steps to control the storage and use of weapons in the house.
The police investigation also revealed that Grimes was accompanied by another fraternity member when he shot at Sanderson. Police said there had been reports of other homeless people being shot at near the fraternity house and that during interviews that were part of the investigation some members of the fraternity referred to homeless people as “bums.”
“Some of the people who are accountable were not held accountable,” said Adam Brittle, Sanderson’s attorney. “The sentencing (of Grimes) did not satisfy many people.”
Brittle said Sanderson was in the alley, minding his own business, when he was shot.“You shouldn’t be made target practice for minding your own business,” he said.

Subject: Letter to send to nationals for all chapters to read
Today Virginia Tech experienced an unimaginable tragedy of scale never before seen in the United States.
Over the past 24 hours the VA Kappa chapter has received a vast array of e-mails and phone calls from Sig Ep chapters around the country expressing their concern. I would like to personally thank all of you who have gone out of your way to show your chapters support, it means a lot to us to know that brothers whom we never even met have a sincere concern for their counter-parts miles away in Blacksburg.
We are working closely with nationals and internally to try to help begin to cope with the tragic loss of our fellow students here at Virginia Tech. As of 6:30PM today (4/16) all members of VA Kappa chapter have been accounted for. We are extremely fortunate that none have been directly afflicted, however; the scope of the damage done today is far-reaching, and it will be a long while before things return to normal.
We hope to come together as a brotherhood and begin to heal and move forward in a positive direction. Updates may be found on our website:http://www.SigEpVT.org. The hearts and prayers of the VA Kappa chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon go out to all who were affected today by these senseless acts of violence.
Thank you again for all of your support,
