Best. Rush. Video. Ever.

Thanks to Tennessee Eta for this video. It is perhaps the best encapsulation of what "Fraternity" means I have seen. No frenetic music. No quick cut photos or videos, but a simple message that will challenge and inspire anyone who sees it.

It is long - 8 minutes - but well worth the time. Not a SigEp? Watch it anyway for an short explanation of what the concept of fraternity and sorority is really about. You will not regret it.

TCU Kappa Sig Branded with DDD Symbols

University student has his buttocks branded

By Cynthia Trowbridge

Amon Carter IV, a sophomore at Texas Christian University, agreed to have his buttocks branded with his fraternity Kappa Sigma symbols. But he ended up with more than just their symbols.

Breckenridge, United States - On spring break more than a year ago Amon "Chance" Carter IV had consented to have the symbols from his fraternity branded on his buttocks. The branding was not completed so while on a ski trip in January the 20-year-old while drunk agreed to have his fraternity brothers finish the job by using a hot coat hanger.

The students along with members of Tri Delta Sorority in Breckenridge, Colorado had rented a house for the trip. While Carter was passed out they continued to brand the other butt cheek with the large triangles of the Tri Delta Sorority.

Carter said it was a dumb, drunken decision.

Carter said it was taken too far but he takes full responsibility for his actions both the underage drinking and making the dumb decision.

Carter said, "I woke up the next morning and I was in a lot of pain. My whole other butt cheek was destroyed."

Carter is the great-grandson of Amon G. Carter Sr., a Fort Worth civic leader and founder of the Star-Telegram.

Carter said he doesn't remember anything about the second branding.

Amon Carter III hired attorney Kathryn Craven to investigate the incident. She found that it was likely one student was the main perpetrator but up to 18 people were present while the branding took place.

During the branding Carter incurred second- and third-degree burns on his buttocks which will need at least six plastic surgeries to repair the damage.

After an investigation by the Breckenridge Police Department they released this statement, “All the evidence suggests that Amon Carter IV was a willing participant and the branding was not part of any fraternity initiation, as he is already a full member." With that they concluded no crime had been committed.

Carter said, "People are saying, 'Chance needs to be held accountable. Like I haven’t been punished enough.

"This may be the hardest lesson I’ll ever learn in my life."

TCU Kappa Sig Branded at Ski Event

TCU student's branding prompts inquiry by school, fraternity
By MELODY McDONALD

FORT WORTH — Texas Christian University and officials of Kappa Sigma Fraternity are investigating an incident in which a student suffered second- and third-degree burns after being branded on his buttocks during a ski trip.

The student, Amon G. "Chance" Carter IV, will have to undergo plastic surgery to repair the damage.

Carter was injured on the last night of his fraternity’s ski trip at Breckenridge, Colo. He and fellow members of his fraternity, as well as members of the Tri Delta Sorority, had rented a house for the trip.

Carter said that the group drank and got rowdy and that at some point he agreed to allow his fraternity brothers to finish branding the Kappa Sigma letters on his rear end with a hot coat hanger — a brand that was started on a spring break trip more than a year ago.

It was a dumb, drunken decision, Carter said Wednesday.

But his fraternity brothers, Carter said, took things too far. Not only did they complete the brand, they also branded large triangles — the Greek symbol for Tri Delta Sorority — on his other buttock while he was passed out.

"I woke up the next morning and I was in a lot of pain," Carter said. "My whole other butt cheek was destroyed."

Carter said no one will tell him exactly what happened the night of Jan. 8 or who was responsible. He said he has no recollection of the second branding. Carter and his family say they are considering pursuing criminal charges or a lawsuit against those involved. An investigator with the Breckenridge Police Department was trying to contact the Carter family about the incident, an official said.

Carter, 20, a sophomore at TCU, is the great-grandson of Amon G. Carter Sr., a Fort Worth civic leader and founder of the Star-Telegram. His father, Amon Carter III, hired attorney Kathryn Craven to investigate. Craven said her investigation determined that one student was likely the main perpetrator and up to 18 people witnessed the incident.

TCU issued a statement Wednesday afternoon saying it has begun an investigation.

"University policy prohibits harming another student, which would obviously include branding," spokeswoman Lisa Albert said.

Mitchell Wilson, executive director for Kappa Sigma Fraternity, based in Charlottesville, Va., said it began an investigation after learning of the incident Wednesday. "We certainly do not tolerate this type of behavior," he said.

Carter said he takes full responsibility for his actions — drinking underage and making a dumb decision.

"People are saying, 'Chance needs to be held accountable,’ Like I haven’t been punished enough.

"This may be the hardest lesson I’ll ever learn in my life."

New HQ site!

Our HQ site has undergone a major makeover. I haven't gone over it in depth yet, but the "look and feel" is definitely more dynamic and inviting.
So what do you think? To borrow from a post from a few days ago, does it enhance our brand?

Greek organization image

This article in the Southern Utah Univ. student paper has a reference which stopped me in my tracks:
Marketing pioneer David Ogilvy once said, "Every advertisement should be thought of as a contribution to the complex symbol which is the brand image." Each poster and sign that an organization produces contributes the image of that group.
The next obvious question is: What do your posters say about the brand image of your chapter?
About SigEp?

OP-ED: Greek organizations must repair image - Opinion
