This article in the Southern Utah Univ. student paper has a reference which stopped me in my tracks:

Marketing pioneer David Ogilvy once said, "Every advertisement should be thought of as a contribution to the complex symbol which is the brand image." Each poster and sign that an organization produces contributes the image of that group.

The next obvious question is: What do your posters say about the brand image of your chapter?

SigEp Banner flies high in Iraq

I received this email from an alumnus named Jeff Lehmkuhl from our Cal Upsilon Chapter (Cal State San Bernardino) who is deployed and flying helicopters in Iraq. The SigEp flag flew on Jeff's helicopter during a combat sortie. Jeff is a former Chapter President and an all around great brother.

Maybe something like this would be good for the Journal and could also be used in some of the multimedia stuff we do at Conclave?

Attached is a photo of a SigEp banner Misha mailed to me a few weeks ago. The banner flew over Iraq on a combat sortie in the HH-60G helicopter (a combat search and rescue platform) seen in the picture. Obviously the specs of the mission are classified. The banner was flown on 10 May 2009. I will have the enclosed certificate signed my the rest of the crew and bring it back with me in a couple of weeks. As you can see by the orange glow in the background of the picture it twas not a pretty day to fly! The dust decided to take up residence on everything in the helo, to include my pathetic excuse for a mustache! I'll see you all in a couple of weeks....I'll be in southern California around the 8th of June.

Long tails and SigEp "Chucks"

One of the phenomena that people who are into web marketing are interested in is "the long tail effect." That is the marketing strategy of selling a large number of different or even unique items in very small quantities. Examples include Amazon and Cafepress.com. The technology of the web and of automated manufacturing has lead to an increasing use of this concept to give the buyer exactly what he or she wants.

A few weeks ago I found out the Converse website has a feature where you can design your own shoes. You can specify from a range of colors and patterns for all the various aspects of a shoe from the the outer and inner canvas to the laces and tongue - even the stitching and the strip on the sole. Since Conclave is coming up and I want to be ready, I started playing around with the choices for roll-your-own "Chuck Taylor" high tops (the kind I had as a kid) and came up with this:


Of course I had to label them, too, because who else would be that garish.
Well, I ordered them, and they arrived last week, unfortunately too late for CLA. On the bright side, I am now officially ready for Conclave. Look for me and my "SigEp Chucks" in Orlando! Now, I just need to find a very special iron-on patch to replace the Converse "All Star"...

"Coastal Tradition" neckties

We got a nice letter from "Spencer" at Coastal Traditions today. They have a line of neckties with a fraternity theme and wanted some exposure.

SigEp is prominent, but they also have SAE, Sigma Chi, KA, ATO, Kappa Sig, and others. They have a license 'bug' on the site so one may assume they are legit.

These guys get one free ad. After that they'll have to buy space.

Sigma Phi Epsilon Colors

The official colors of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity are red and purple. Gold is utilized essentially as trim, but is not an official color. While gold is used on SigEp chapter flags for Greek letter chapter designations and as striping, it is NOT an official color of the Fraternity. While gold is used in the banners that have flown overhead at Conclave it is in the same regard, as a trim, but not as an official color of the Fraternity.

The official flowers of the Fraternity are red roses and deep purple violets. The Fraternity has two official flowers that match the same colors as the Fratenity's two official colors. There is not a gold colored flower that officially represents the Fraternity.

The same could be said of the flag of the United States of America whose colors are red, white, and blue. While gold fringe may be used in interior flags, gold is not an official color of the flag, but merely as trim --- identical in concept to the Fraternity's official colors --- and does not include gold as an official color.

Finally, and without revealing any secrets whatsoever of the Ritual, it clearly states the two very specific official colors of the Fraternity, red and purple, and for a very specific reason. Gold is NOT included.
