Alpha Phi member Megan Freese called the event a bonding experience.

“It’s fun to do with your house,” said Freese, who planned to do two shifts between studying and attending homecoming festivities.

A few tables away, UNL freshman Travis Eakins of Sigma Phi Epsilon summed up his motivations for volunteering in a single sentence:

“It feels good to help people,” he said.

The new homecoming week tradition began last year when Sig Ep members decided that the $4,000 reserved for building a float and to decorate their house for homecoming would be better spent providing food for hungry children in disaster areas. Fraternity members also volunteered with Lincoln Kids Against Hunger to package food.

“It was such an impactful event for our guys, we decided to expand it to a university wide event,” said Max Rodenburg, Sig Ep president and co-chairman of the Huskers Against Hunger event.

Students representing all areas of campus teamed with the local satellite of Kids Against Hunger, a humanitarian food-aid organization that works with volunteers throughout the United States and Canada to package a dry, vitamin-fortified soy-rice casserole that is distributed to starving children and their families in more than 60 countries.

Both the Homecoming king and queen crowned during a pregame ceremony in Tiger Stadium on Saturday have made the University and Baton Rouge their homes away from home.

Sydney Brown and Hunter Hartwig, both mass communication seniors, are out-of-state students - Brown from Park City, Utah and Hartwig from Katy, Texas.

Brown is a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, LSU Homecoming Committee, Advertising Federation, Order of Omega and College Democrats.

"The people who are on Homecoming Court are generally extremely involved," Brown said. "They really set a great example, and I was so honored to be in the company of the nine other people who were on court with me."

Hartwig is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, LSU Ambassadors, STRIPES and the Interfraternity Council.

"Student involvement is so important to our University," Hartwig said. "It's what drives our University. It's what drives the student section at LSU. And just seeing [the homecoming court at the game] might make people want to get involved and really help our University out."

Looks like it will be Tennessee vs. LSU for the SEC title this year. As a "loyal Vol" I hope that LSU brings the team that played Kentucky and that Tennessee brings the team that played Georgia. That way we will at least have a shot.

We got a nice letter from "Spencer" at Coastal Traditions today. They have a line of neckties with a fraternity theme and wanted some exposure.

SigEp is prominent, but they also have SAE, Sigma Chi, KA, ATO, Kappa Sig, and others. They have a license 'bug' on the site so one may assume they are legit.

These guys get one free ad. After that they'll have to buy space.

Kansas Jayhawks Chalk One Up for Homecoming

Several groups are gathering on Wescoe Beach today to make designs in chalk to coordinate with the theme Jayhawk Nation. The group with the best design will receive 100 points toward the homecoming competition.

Amidst the clouds of dust on Wescoe today, groups gather hoping to garner more points for the homecoming competition. Wescoe Beach is going to be covered in the chalk designs from groups participating in Chalk N’ Rock.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., groups will decorate their pre-assigned square in a way that coordinates with the Homecoming Week theme Jayhawk Nation. The designs are being judged at 2 p.m. Judging criteria is based on the observance of the theme, creativity, which includes imagination, humor and creativity in planning and executing, and appearance, meaning attention to detail, decoration quality, and overall look. The designs must be in good taste and appropriate for a public audience. The judges are secret until the time of judging.

First place in the competition is worth 100 points, second place is worth 75 points, and third place is worth 50 points. The groups that do not place in the competition will receive 25 points for participation. Groups are required to supply their own chalk. In case of bad weather, Chalk N’ Rock will be moved to tomorrow.

The Chalk N’ Rock competition is nothing new to homecoming, said daily events co-chairwoman Morgan Shirley, Overland Park senior.

“[It is one] of our traditional events because we’re working with the Alumni Association, so we like to have some consistency,” she said.

However, Shirley said that students hadn’t tired of participating in this event, regardless of its longevity in homecoming.

“[It is one] of our most popular and most competitive events,” she said.

All groups who applied for the Chalk N’ Rock are participating. Those groups are Gamma Phi and Triangle, Association of University Residence Halls, All Scholarship Hall Council, Alpha Gamma Delta and Phi Delta Theta, Black Student Union, Pi Beta Phi and Phi Kappa Psi, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Kappa and Pi Kappa Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta and Delta Chi, Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Delta Tau, Chi Omega and Delta Upsilon, Kappa Delta and Phi Gamma Delta, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Alpha Chi Omega and Theta Chi, Alpha Delta Pi and Kappa Sigma, Delta Gamma and Sig Chi, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Delta Delta Delta.

So when you hear the aggressive cries on Wescoe Beach of the participants in the Chalk N’ Rock contest, stay back, unless you want to be covered in chalk.

PSU groups take part in 'Yell Like Hell' | The Morning Sun

The PSU Nursing Association took home the title in the co-ed division, Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority won the female division, and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity won the male division.

And from the looks of it, the Sig Eps and Tri-Sigs were cheering for each other. Both loudly supported each other before, during and after their routines.

Dustin Lang, a sophomore technology management major from Nevada, Mo., who was part of the victorious Sig Ep squad, said taking home the trophy was well worth all the hard work he and his fellow fraternity brothers out in.

"It's amazing," he said. "All of the hard work we put into it, it was very well worth it."

Lang's group managed to tie in "Wheel of Fortune," "Riverdance," country music, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," and the required cheer.

The time was right for the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and and the women of Phi Mu Fraternity, who won first place in the house dec competition with their creation, “The Time is Right for an Orange State of Mind.”

In the men's race, PIKE was first with a time of 41 minutes and 37 seconds, Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) was second, Alpha Tau Omega was third with three laps behind the leader, Sigma Phi Epsilon/Kappa Alpha Order was fourth with four laps behind the leader, Sigma Chi was fifth, Phi Kappa Phi was sixth both with five laps behind the leader and Phi Delta Theta was seventh with six laps behind the leader.

Weekend brings Homecoming celebrations - Campus

"Fright Fest is a great way to start off the weekend, to celebrate the end of midterms and to kick off Halloween celebrations," said Felicia Barrett, the Dawgs After Dark coordinator and a senior from Valdosta.

Sigma Phi Epsilon also will build a sneak preview of its haunted house in Tate for the festivities.

SIUE homecoming: Students lean back and let it rip in Recliner Race

It's homecoming time. Let the games begin. The sillier the better.

Fraternity and sorority members gathered midday Tuesday to for the Recliner Race, just one of many events taking place this week to celebrate Homecoming Week at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

"Get the ugliest recliner you can find and then put it on wheels," explained John Davenport, coordinator of Greek life and orientation.

The winning LazyBoy featured orange upholstery spray-painted with the Greek letters Sigma Phi Epsilon, representing the fraternity that decorated and raced it. It sat on a wooden frame with wheels.

One seated man served as the "driver" while three other fraternity brothers pushed the "Sig Ep Stallion" to victory.

Well, it beats studying for mid-terms. (Sadly, there was no picture.)

Red, White & You Week kicks off with Feb. 26 celebration

Lamar University is having a reunion/celebration.

An array of activities are on the agenda for Red, White & You/Homecoming 2007, scheduled Feb. 26-March 4 on campus and throughout Southeast Texas. Festivities will include 50th-Anniversary reunions of the Class of 1957 and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, as well as reunions of geology and music alumni, opening of a mineral exhibition from the Houston Museum of Natural Science and induction of the first four alumni in Lamar’s music hall of fame.
